Philadelphia, PA (BlackNews.com) – Philadelphia Principal, Salome Thomas-EL, author of the best sellers, I Choose to Stay (Kensington — March 2003) and The Immortality of Influence (Kensington — May 2006), foreword by I Am Legend star Will Smith, offers his Ten Critical Mandates for parents to ensure the success of their children in school in 2008.

At the beginning of every year, people make resolutions to lose weight, stop smoking, or eliminate debt, when many times their children are struggling in school, in trouble with the law, or suffering from substance abuse. The crisis plaguing our children permeates all levels of our society. From low income single parents, to multi-millionaire professional athletes and coaches, this pattern of deterioration has placed our young people in a very unstable academic and professional position.

"Principal EL" suggests that parents take the following steps IMMEDIATELY with their children, to move them forward not only toward a better year, but a brighter future.

  1. Read to your child, and allow your child to read to you EVERY DAY
  2. Review their homework daily
  3. Limit television viewing to 1-3 hours everyday (less is even better)
  4. Ensure your child’s excellent attendance in school
  5. Play educational games together regularly (i.e. Scrabble, Sudoku, chess)
  6. Improve their diet – limit junk food and sugar
  7. Schedule weekly exercise for you and your child
  8. Give your child a positive message/affirmation everyday
  9. Monitor the internet use and music choices of your children
  10. Invest a minimum of one hour per month volunteering in/for your child’s school

Recognized as an authority in the area of children achieving, Principal EL has garnered the attention of California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger who stated, "Salome Thomas-EL has touched many people and will affect many more in the generations to come," as well as actor Will Smith who expressed, "Thomas-EL was called to serve, and has inspired others to pick up the torch of service."

Salome Thomas-EL was Philadelphia Magazine’s Best Philadelphian. His book, I Choose to Stay, was optioned by Disney films and he recently signed a development deal to star in a television show for parents and teachers. Many years of proven research support these resolutions, which are also based upon Mr. Thomas-EL’s twenty plus years as a teacher and principal, and his own personal experience as a father of two young daughters.
