Different Directions

by Becky DeWitt

Now that time has allowed us to experience the first month of the New Year, now what? We have had time to review and prepare plans that we think will manifest during this special year. Why is it so special? One reason is that it is a leap year. It might take a leap of faith to enter into a time of new beginning. Many have fasted and prayed seeking the Lord for direction during the month of January. Others have made plans and scheduled events without any thought as to what the will of God is for their lives for this year.

A Worthy Project

tiedtogreatness From the Desk of Alex Ellis

Dear Brothers,

This is a call to my brothers. I have been sensing an urgency as it pertains to the state of our young men. Often times in our own quest to achieve “success” in life we can easily find ourselves so enamored in our own ambitions that we lose touch with those struggling around us. I am deeply concerned about the plight of our young brothers. Their image, among other things, is suffering. They are in dire need of another image to be modeled. It is not the responsibility of the government to have to pass laws about sagging pants to bring home the message of the power of ones image. It is our responsibility to ban together as fathers, grandfathers, uncles, big brothers, elders, and mentors to raise the bar and set a new standard.

By Makeisha Lee, Health and Nutritional Advisor

Have you abandoned your New Year’s Resolution to get healthier? If you have, you are not alone. You are amongst millions of Americans who unfortunately by this time of year have not done as well. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Make the decision to just get back on the saddle, start from where you are in order to get healthier. It is better to make small changes at a gradual pace that are realistic and achievable, than to give up, throw in the towel and go back to unhealthy eating.

Do You Like What You See
?
by Damainion Ewell

Can it be possible to be formed and fashioned in the image of our Father, and yet be repulsed by what you see before you? When you look in the mirror, do you wish that you and the person you are looking at were different? How often do you look at yourself in disappointment and embarrassment? Surely, as people of God, we are taught to shun such ideals and “count it all joy.” But, what do you do when who you are is not good enough?

Building Strong Marriages

lgrosvenor_thumb Build A Strong Marriage: Erect Boundaries
With Friends of the Opposite Sex
by Linda Dominique Grosvenor

For years as single people we have been urged to foster lasting relationships, be open, honest and learn to communicate our needs clearly and effectively in preparation for our spouse. However, once we’ve received that special person into our lives that we wish to cherish, share our hopes and dreams with and connect with on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, most of us haven’t been taught beyond that. We haven’t been taught how or when to break ties with or “cool down” some former relationships that may be detrimental to the budding marriage covenant itself. Of course, we’re talking about being friends with those of the opposite sex.

How to Adjust Your Priorities

100_0293-sm How to Adjust Your Priorites
by Tyora Moody

A few weeks ago, I talked about setting priorities, using the story of Martha and Mary. In this familiar story, Jesus scolded Martha for not making him a priority. Now mind you, at first glance, it might seem Martha’s preparations for her special guest made it appear Jesus was a priority. This assumption goes downhill when her obsession with her workload causes her frustration. Jesus is the one who requests all come to him who are weary and burdened (Matthew 11:28), so certainly any frustrations stemmed from Martha’s frantic service.  Who knows, her sister might have eventually helped, but it was more important for Mary to fill her cup with spiritual food versus helping to prepare physical food.

In the next few weeks, using the book of Psalms, I will post a series called, “How to Adjust Your Priorities” There will be seven principles discussed in this series. Let’s explore the first principle.
