300 MARRIAGE ACTIVISTS RESPOND TO CALL, BLACK MARRIAGE DAY IS SUNDAY, MARCH 30

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) – More than 300 marriage activists across the nation responded to the call for Black Marriage Day 2008 sponsors.

Representing 37 states and some 200 cities, Black Marriage Day 2008 sponsors are planning a diverse series of events celebrating marriage in the Black community for Sunday, March 30, 2008. These events include: Tom Thumb weddings, marriage-themed contests for teens, workshops and conferences, Date Nights for singles considering marriage, plus community banquets and inductions into Marriage Halls of Fame for longtime married couples.

Last year, some 150 cities participated by hosting Black Marriage Day activities, some developing local Black Marriage Day Marriage Halls of Fame. The Black Marriage Day Marriage Hall of Fame in Dallas, TX, has become an exhibit to be displayed at the local African-American museum on Black Marriage Day 2008, with plans for permanent display at Dallas’ Love Field.

Proclamations celebrating marriage in the Black community have already been issued by the Governor of Michigan and the Mayor of Durham, NC. Other jurisdictions are considering similar Black Marriage Day 2008 proclamations.

Black Marriage Day is led by Nisa Islam Muhammad, Executive Director of Wedded Bliss Foundation, Inc., 236 Massachusetts Avenue NE, Suite 610, Washington, DC. This is the seventh year of her marriage education initiative promoting the benefits of marriage in the Black community.

"This year the passion for celebrating Black marriage is bigger and better than ever," Muhammad said. "From Savannah, Georgia, to Sacramento, California, marriage activists are committed to changing our community. Marriage matters to the African-American community, and we want everyone to know."

Wedded Bliss Foundation’s goal is to have 5,000 couples across the country renew their wedding vows on Black Marriage Day 2008, March 30, 2008, with the theme: Getting Married is Good; Staying Married is Better; a Healthy Marriage is Best.

Wedded Bliss is urging churches and community groups everywhere to mobilize couples to demonstrate their support for marriage by renewing their marriage vows in a national celebration of marriage as a key building block of family, community and our nation.

To increase couples chances of staying together WBF is asking organizations to offer free marriage education classes during March 2008 to celebrate marriage in the Black community.
