You walk through your front door after fighting through traffic. You are too mentally exhausted to hang up your coat, so you just toss it across the couch. You drop the keys on your glass table. With a loud thud, the table is nearly cracked up the middle. The high-priced designer shoes you recently purchased gets the bargain-priced treatment, as you kick them off and fling them across the room. You flop down on the couch, laying on top of the coat that you threw down beforehand and grab the remote. As you proceed to flick from channel to channel, you notice some alarming words that wander across the screen. According to reports, thousands upon thousands more people have lost their jobs. You decide to entertain the negative, so you listen as the news anchor announces an outlook of doom, gloom, and utter bleakness.

Recently, during the Feast of Purim, the Jewish celebration of deliverance from the enemy’s plan of extinction, my son gave me a copy of the book of Esther in Hebrew and English. Naturally, I was able to read the English, but looking at the words in Hebrew fascinated me. Then I thought about my son and his “Jewish Connection”, a friendship that he has with a family that would give him a copy of such sacred writings.

As the story of Chris Brown and Rihanna’s domestic dispute continues to make headlines, it brings attention to a very important challenge facing America today. Although the primary issue appears to be about men abusing women, the real tragedy is that men are abusing children in addition to abusing each other as well.
The real issue here is how do we eradicate violence all together? What can be done to keep men from killing each other and hurting the people they are supposed to love?
