Behind the Book Interview

Peaches "Ms. Peaches" Smith, Author

Kulture Kidz: Tell us a little about yourself. What are some things you like to do in your free time?
Ms. Peaches I am married to Al (now known as Mr. Peaches).  We have 5 children,  3 boys and 2 girls.  I also have one grandpeach (son). I am a professional storyteller, author and pastor. I spend the majority of my time, free or otherwise with children.  I have been told many times that I am a sucker for punishment because I always have kids around.  I'm not a sucker I just love kids.
Kulture Kidz: What role did books play in your childhood?
Ms. Peaches Reading was a way of escape for me.  Whenever I was reading I could be anyone I wanted to be.  I didn't have to live up to anyone's expectations.  Being a pastor's kid has it's drawbacks.
Kulture Kidz: What were some of your favorite books as a child?
Ms. Peaches I really enjoyed the Lassie series. My favorite being Lassie Come Home.  I also enjoyed reading the Bible and our funny looking encyclopedias.  You know the kind you get one a week at the grocery store.
Kulture Kidz: When did you first notice you had a talent for writing?
Ms. Peaches In high school I took a creative writing class.  At that time all I ever wrote was poetry.  My first love is storytelling.  I use stories to teach and preach.  A teacher across the hall asked if I would do a Thanksgiving story for her class. After doing the story she suggested that I put my stories on paper. I only wrote them down to get her off my back. God knew what He was doing.

A few months later a publisher/author visited our school.  The teachers informed him of my storytelling and writing.  He approached me and within a year of our first meeting I had 4 books on the market.  God knew I had talent because He gave it to me.  The publisher recognized it- me I had no clue.

Kulture Kidz: Tell us about your latest book "Danny's Got A Gun".
Ms. Peaches Many of our schools today have experienced a tragic violent act. In most cases someone knew about but was afraid to tell.  Danny is a student he constantly gets in trouble. He has a violent temper.  He is eventually expelled from school. Danny returns with a weapon. Several students see him and the gun.  The book stops there.  My hope is to help students understand that it's okay to tell and work through their anger.
Kulture Kidz: I understand you are a storyteller. Describe your performances. What can children expect.
Ms. Peaches I do a 45 minute age based program.  I tell stories about African-American history, Native-American history, drug, alcohol, gangs, violence and pre-marital sex prevention.  I also tell stories that encourage and challenge them to be their very best.  The love Jesus comes through loud and clear.  I don't mention God, but the kids hear Him.
Kulture Kidz: How can parents and teachers contact you about your schedule?
